I have missed documenting so much on here and just writing in general. What to do...Amy Flegehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01237104230554615007noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27395618.post-23861942983734483682013-08-21T20:15:00.002-05:002013-08-21T20:15:39.182-05:00First day of schoolI remember with the older two kids, being anxious, and not being able to sleep the night before the first day of school. I think I was more excited for them than they were!
With Mayson, its a little different type of anxiety This year is soooo different from last year. thing she has the same is her Speech Pathologist ----who we love!
Everything else is different:

* New homeroom teacher

* Class room located in different wing of the school

* Riding new bus-Reg bus instead of Special needs bus

* Moved up to level 1 from level 2 for pull outs which
also means new special ed teacher and room.

* New Para - Aide

Now none of this bothered me until about 2 weeks ago. The more I thought about it the more I worried. My little girl had no idea what to do on a regular bus, where her new classroom was, who her new teachers were... She was going to be soooo confused! While the changes were what she needs to be independent, was I setting her up to fail?

Well today this happened....

The bus went great! Thanks to the help of her friends Molly and Emily. They made sure she got on the bus ok and sat with them. Mayson was beyond excited!

About an hour after school started I got a nice phone call from her teacher saying the morning went great! She was sitting at her first grade desk working and doing fine!
Her daily report that comes home everyday was great. She had a awesome day!!!!

WHAT A RELIEF!!!

So, we will prepare for day two and hope for the best. I think I really have nothing to be worried about. That sweet girl always seems to prove me wrong!

Now, if I could just get her to go to sleep at a decent time!!!!

In Iowa, when a child is born with Down Syndrome, they can receive services through our local AEA agency. They started coming for Mayson when she was 4 weeks old doing physical therapy. Eventually, we added a education therapy and speech. They came to our house and we became great friends:)

It all changes when your child turns 3. You lose those services and you are to get them from the AEA within your school district. When Mayson turned 3 in Februaury, they wanted her to start that week--4 days a week and ALL DAY. Oh, and they wanted us to put our 20 lbs--3 year old on a bus with strangers. Yeah, None of that happened.

That August, we placed Mayson in preschool within our school district, 2 days a week, and just for half days. She seemed to love it. She was already a very social child but knew she could benefit from more interactive play. Preschool there was for socializing and interacting with other kids, following directions, singing songs, coloring and having fun! It was a full inclusion program which was great for Mayson. But since Mayson wasn't in the program full time she did not get full time services. She only got speech in a group setting once a week and that was all they offered her at the time. We also were told by the head teacher that Mayson would probably never follow a routine or directions. That really STUNG. We already knew our girl could follow directions and she was huge on routine! Obviously, this teacher wasn't giving her the benefit of the doubt nor did she truly knew what our girl was capable of.

So, after Christmas break we moved her to a new preschool in a different elementary building, but within our school district. We loved our school district and they were known for inclusion and their resources. Mayson adapted right away to her new environment. And her new teacher embraced her and worked with her. She did what all teachers should do.

Now that Mayson is going into first grade, we are so thankful for that teacher that embraced her, let her be and individual, a friend to others. Mayson is now at reading level with her peers, is in her class room all day except for pull outs for math, reading and speech. She is learning Spanish, Art, Music and goes to P.E. with the rest of her class...all because that teacher GOT IT!

That's where this poster falls into place. I sent Mayson's picture into the IDSC picture campaign. And WOW.... it went viral. I took a chance knowing there maybe some upset teachers in the background. But to me, it was more important to get the message out there. Especially to the new parents that are just beginning their education journey. Don't be afraid to advocate for your child and remember to love those teachers... Most will love your child right back...they are a gift and your child will do amazing things because of them!

You can now buy Mayson's poster HERE Get it and spread the message!!!
This day always lands on the 21st due to the date 3-21. This
correlates with Down Syndrome and the trisomy of the 21st chromosome!
Down Syndrome is apart of our life now. Not that it never was, since Cousin Shelly too has Down Syndrome. Its always been apart of my life. But in a different way. I was the cousin and now I am the PARENT....... I am now responsible for advocating and making this girl of mine the best she can be.
I am so lucky to have Shelly as my cousin. He is such an inspiration. His love for God is overflowing and is infectious. He lives on his own, has a job, rides his bike EVERYWHERE, fights illness like a bulldog, and is gentle and kind. My memories of having sleep overs with him, playing at Grandma and Grampa's farm, swimming in the pool, birthday parties, easter egg hunts and playing house is something I treasure. Not just anyone gets to be as lucky as me to have an opportunity to grow up with someone with Down Syndrome before you have your own child with Down Syndrome. He lead the path for me......
I think a lot of people think of Down Sydnrome with a negative perception so I wanted to make sure you all knew for me, its positive!

This month started out with a family get away at the Wisconsin Dells to see our IDSC family. The International Down Syndrome Coalition has become a big part of our Down Syndrome Journey. They believe all life is precious! Remember this picture of our Mayson?? The IDSC posted this and this thing went VIRAL.....what a great way to advocate !!!

I was lucky enough to be a IDSC coordinator for the event. What a wonderful experience getting to meet so many great families that share the same special tie... Cant wait for next year!

March 6th was a big day for us as well. The day to SPREAD THE WORD TO END THE WORD! Our family is asking everyone to go HERE and pledge that you are DONE using that nasty nasty word! Our little Mayson understands way more than you think. NO MATTER HOW YOU USE THE WORD, she will get it....she will understand the meaning.....it will hurt her. So just don't use it and go pledge!

On March 21st we will celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. This day always lands on the 21st due to the date 3-21. This correlates with Down Syndrome and the trisomy of the 21st chromosome! Just a great day to celebrate that we have Mayson and cousin Shelly in our lives! Not everyone is as lucky as us to be doubly blessed as we are!

What will you do to help celebrate and advocate ?
I love being able to connect to all my friends, family, 2nd family, see all their posts, pictures, their latest updates.... its awesome. But it has totally made me neglect my blogging. I HATE that I havent blogged since this summer.. Really Amy??? You suck!!....

Here is hoping I can get back into the swing of things!Amy Flegehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01237104230554615007noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27395618.post-57043766500682623352012-07-21T19:17:00.001-05:002012-07-21T19:17:54.409-05:00Pity party

Yup. I.am having a pity party... My very own.....
Why? Cuz I am missing the National Down Syndrome Congress Conference this year. I hate not being in D.C. with all my peeps. Going there and seeing our second family is so amazing. All of our friends are there, we learn so much and have so much fun. It's an experience not all of us are lucky enough to be apart of....that extra chromosome is part of a pretty elite group!
Yup, think I will get get my glass of wine and cry now.:(

I know, I suck, I admit it. But truthfully, not sure anyone reads this anymore or not!! Anyway, here is a little update of what we have been up to.

Jayden: Its the summer before his senior year and in 6 days, he turns 18..sniff sniff...CANT. BELIEVE. IT.
When I was his age, I was working 3 jobs in the summer. Jayden has opted out of money and instead going to several camps this summer..haha. He was asked by the Ely Legion post to go and represent them at Boys State in Des Moines. What a great learning experience for him. He seemed to really enjoy it.
Jayden also qualified for Greco Wrestling Nationals again this summer! He just got back from the 4 day camp at Camp Dodge in Des Moines to prepare. He gets to be home for 2 days and then is off to compete in Fargo. Team Iowa leaves this Saturday and comes home on Jayden's birthday. Such a great experience to wrestle with and against some of the top wrestlers in our nation!
After getting home from Fargo, Jayden will be home 3 days and then off to wrestling camp at Luther College. Not my favorite college for him to go to (Wartburg family here) but they run a great camp!
Any free time, Jayden spends fishing, fishing, fishing....

Rylee: Our 14 year old is going to be a freshman this year... yup, she is growing up too! Eeek! She finished up with a great season of track, breaking a school record with her 4x100 relay. She is so fun to watch! She tried out for freshman cheer, working hard with many early morning practices but it paid off and she made it! She is LOVING it.. I think we have a real cheerleader on our hands.
Rylee also decided to try detassleing this year. I for one, am not a fan, since I am allergic. But she has been doing it for over a week now and has not complained! She is really looking foward to that big pay check!
She is rarely home since she is all about being miss social!!

Mayson: This year our baby girl is going to kindergarten. She is going to be placed in the regular classroom all day and being pulled out 20 minutes for math, 20 minutes for reading and 15 minutes for handwritting. She is going to PE, Music, Art and Spanish with her typical peers as well! We will see how she does! We may finally try having the bus pick her up this year. This mama, is still un-sure of it all, but it sure would be helpful if it would work out.
Mayson started dance class this spring and summer. She LOVES it. That girls really surprises me how much she follows directions and tries everything in class even if she cant do it.....practice makes perfect, right?
I am blessed because I can go to church , a movie, a game and she will sit like a little lady, reading her books and following directions. I am blessed because she can now walk up our stairs without crawling up them. I am blessed because even though she will not use her spoon or fork, she can still find a way to feed herself. I am blessed that every morning and evernight this sweet girl can tell me "i love you"......Yup, I am blessed.

Mayson has sat and gone on the potty for me since she was 3. BUT, she has never been able to tell me she has to go. I have bought the potty watch that you can set for either every 30, 60 or 90 minutes. We are using this tool but she could really care less about it. :( She will sit on her little potty in front of the tv for an hour, and then get up and pee on the floor...seriously???????? I am truly wondering if she still doesnt have the muscle control and the connection of the feeling when she has to go. This is a smart little girl and I just cant put my finger on why she wont TELL me. Any pointers would be great!!!!!PLEASE!!!
It was so fun seeing my girl, do what the other kids were doing and having so much fun. One more week of preschool and she will officially be a kindergartener...EEEEKKK!!!!!Amy Flegehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01237104230554615007noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27395618.post-20689583070096904052012-04-10T13:32:00.001-05:002012-04-10T13:33:44.058-05:00go like gillian!!!My dear friend Gillian Merchanko is writing a book.. not just any book... but a book about being a mother of a child with down syndrome. She is looking for a publisher now and needs 5000 likes on her facebook author page. Please go and "like" her page-- She in an amazing friend, advocate, mother, wife and christian. I am so excited to read her story!!
Here is a little glimps of her whats in store for her book:
The day Gillian Marchenko was told her daughter had Down syndrome, she was standing by her crib alone in the former Soviet Union and let go of of her baby’s hand and ran out of the room. Not only did she run from her child that day, but in the months to follow, Gillian also ran from the God whom she had known on a first name basis since she was 15 years old. Gillian dove into a staggering grief over the child she expected and hid in fear of a brokenness that she had, come to find out, carried with her all her life.
KRASATA (“beauty” in Russian), a Memoir of Motherhood, Down Syndrome, and Surprising Beauty starts with a mother whose faith nearly breaks by the birth of her daughter with special needs. With humor and inspiration, spanning two continents, the story ends with the unexpected beauty of an unwanted child pointing her mother back to what matters most. KRASATA is about redemptive love both between mother and daughter, and child and God.
Gillian recently won most promising new writer at the Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference in California.
Thanks so much!!!Amy Flegehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01237104230554615007noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27395618.post-39432957334710668952012-02-27T12:52:00.001-06:002012-02-27T12:52:43.005-06:00Maysons 6th bithdayWell, we made it passed Maysons 6th birthday. I was kind of dreading it. There is just something about my babies getting passed that 5 year old mark... But she had a wonderful birthday. Yesterday we celebrated with gramas and grampas and aunts and uncles and cousin Aida.
As it gets one week closer to Maysons 6th birthday, I still seem to
have a hard time believing it. This morning as I watched her sleep in
bed, she still looked like a baby to me. She rubbed her little eyes,
rolled over and went back to sleep.
Today, she came up to me and
said, "Mom, come on", while he she hands me the wii remote. I asked
her if she wanted a movie. She replied, "yes, jungle book". And yes,
jungle book was said plain as day! I have waited and waited soooo long
for her to reach a time where I could understand her wants and needs.
We are getting there, little by little. She cant always tell me whats
wrong but she can usually tell me what she wants or needs.
Here she is today trying to pick out a movie. I just love the way she says"jungle book" :)
Hard to believe that she is going to be six.... silly girl still is the size of a 3 year old. Looking back, its amazing everything she has accomplished in her little life so far. Doing sooo many things that any typical kid would do regardless of her down syndrome. I am so proud of what she has done from being able to drink from a bottle, to a straw, sitting up on her own at 7 months, standing at 11 months, eating independently, walking, starting to talk, learning her letters, numbers, colors, letters, reading words, following directions when told. All those little things soooo many parents take for granted!!! Here is a glimps of her first year of life... Gosh I LOVE HER!!!!
For as long as I can remember my grama and grampa J would give us ornaments each year for Christmas. Usually they were hand crafted ones. They loved to craft and spent most of their time after their retirement making hand made crafts, woodworking and sewing. You have to remember there are 8 children with their spouses and 23 grandchildren. That doesnt include the greats and the great greats!!!!! I have saved all the ornaments made by grandparents have made us over the years. Here is a sampling of them from over the years..
Hubs and I finally got our Christmas shopping finished yesterday. We are not fans of malls and crazy shoppers but none the less, we had our shopping date (with lunch out) and got it done! Mom and dad are here so mom helped me wrap the gifts and we got them under the tree!!!!!! It looks so much more like Christmas now!
Mayson loved Halloween this year. She would walk up to the door, say trick or treat and thank you!! When the kids came to our door, Dr Maymay would drop a piece of candy in each of their bags saying "there you go" ,,,, not sure what she liked more, getting the candy or giving it!!!!!!Amy Flegehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01237104230554615007noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27395618.post-78093908098809603812011-10-26T12:36:00.001-05:002011-10-26T12:37:51.957-05:00Adoption......

Adoption plays a large roll in my life. If it wasnt for adoption, my hubby would of never been born in Iowa and we would of never hooked up, as he is adopted. I have had many friends adopt, whether it be local or out of the country.
Adoption is not easy, especially when it comes to all these sweet kids that have down syndrome or other issues, that are not wanted because of a disability. It takes special people to open up their hearts and homes to these kids....... and raise the money to go over and fight for their right to give these precious children a new life.
My friend Erin Harlan, her husband Zac and their daughter Addie are doing just that!!! Right now they are trying to raise money by having a AWESOME Fundraiser so they can bring "Sister" home!! Check out their adoption website THE JOURNEY TO BRING SISTER HOME and all their great prizes This could be your way of helping bring one more child home to their forever family!Amy Flegehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01237104230554615007noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27395618.post-3178624394987795672011-10-16T17:56:00.000-05:002011-10-16T17:56:04.897-05:00LIFEBeing on facebook, has really opened my world to the Down Syndrome community. It is so wonderful to make friends, see how their children and families are doing, and even meeting them in person. They have become a wealth of knowledge and information and my second family. We all learn and grow with each other on our journey with Down Syndrome.
One thing that has come up ALOT lately, is new blood testing detecting Down Syndrome in the baby. I have mixed feelings on this. My doctor sat me down at 12 weeks along and give me a list of all kinds of tests I could have done while pregnant with Mayson. After he gave me the list, his first question to me was "Will any of these test change anything about your pregnancy?" I said, no, of course, and so he said "then why have them!"
Why this new test maybe a great alternative to an amnio ( if its as accurate as they say it is) due to the chance of miscarriage. I also wonder how many more will use these results to have abortions. The rate is already sky high...um like 90% sky high. That right there makes me want to barf..... because as I sit here and write this, my daughter sits next to me and plays with her baby dolls, talking to them, swaddling them, pretending to feed them..just like any 5 year old would. Just because she has one extra chromosome, should of never been an issue of keeping her or not.. That is not my decision or anyones, only Gods. Her life is just as precious and sacred as anyone's! I couldnt imagine what my life would be without her.
I was PRO preschool again, and they were PRO kindergarten.
One of my main reasons I was for preschool was Mayson's fine motor skills. This sweet girl still cannot draw a line on command, let alone even want to hold a pencil, crayon, marker, glue stick or scissors. We are still trying to get her to use a spoon and fork correctly. I requested that our local AEA re-evaluate her for OT services since they had denied her one on one the last year school. They agreed to do the evaluation which took a few weeks to do. We all met back for her IEP again at the end of May, and their conclusion was that after working several times with her one on one, they did not see any improvement so, they would not give her one on one therapy at school.... ARE YOU FRICKEN KIDDING ME?????? Basically, they are telling me they are giving up on her.... its not worth their time. I am stunned.
We do private OT and I LOVE our private OT but we only get to see her every other week now that Mayson is in school 4 full days. Our state is supposed to provide our children with services at their schools once they turn 3. My girl is only 5 and is already slipping through the system. They are denying her her rights. It doesnt seem fair. She has so much potential and they are already giving up on her.
MAKES ME SICK!!! THIS MAY GET UGLY BUT I WILL KEEP FIGHTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
end of rant...
