Now were we live is in danger... We are high enough and out of danger but have been without poor. Over 30000+ are without it. Approximately 8000 have been evacuated from their homes. The heart of Cedar Rapids is dead. Over 100 blocks are at least 6 feet under water. A levy had broke and the main train bridge that delivers out of Cedar Rapids collapsed and is gone.
Our city is in trouble. The Governor has been here and the red cross and national guard are doing all they can do. Please pray for our friends here in Cedar Rapids with the loss of their houses and businesses. The devastation is beyond belief.......

I don't know what to say. Part of me wants to come home (Waterloo) and help if I can. The other part wants to stay in IL away from it all. My entire family lives in Waterloo and Mark's grandma is in CF. Mark's brother is in IA City and lots of others are in Des Moines. Its TOO much. I'm glued to the tv and internet and talk with my family every few hours. I pray for you all and that the bad weather ceases while IA gets it's arms around all of these tragedies. Keep us all posted when you can.

I've been thinking of you and praying for everyone.

I'm originally from NW Tenn, and I can remember the devastating flood in 1993 when everyone worked so hard to try to prevent or minimize the damage and save what they could. The levees were even piled with sandbags trying to contain the Mighty Miss, but they broke. It was horrifying/heartbreaking to me.

I know how it feels to be in a natural disaster. The helplessness, the loss(es), lack of security/control, what you see and know everyday being unrecognizable as if in a strange land, the anxiety and the stress, and so much more.

It used to bother me when well meaning people would say for me to be thankful because we all still had each other, as I was speaking to them of our losses. Believe me I was very thankful, but at the same time it wasn't a comforting statement because the reality was we were overwhelmed with losses, and we had been through the very, real, close threat of almost loosing some or all of us.

The lifesaver for us was the American Red Cross-AWESOME! They immediately provide the basic essentials you need to live like toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet/tissue paper, clothing, diapers, wipes, milk, food, blankets, personal hygiene supplies, and try to take care of so many-even law enforcement, rescuers, ect.

I've donated to the American Red Cross since then, and have been donating more to help in some kind of way.

My heart goes out to you and all others during this devastating time-lives will never be the same, but it does and will get better-I will be praying deeply from my heart for you/family, and all others.

    Thinking of you/everyone,
    Amanda
